Paul Johnson edged out Charlie Weis and Bobby Ross as the top coach among Independent schools

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-The Navy football team is ranked 30th in the country by Phil Steele's 2006 College Football Preview Magazine. Notre Dame (seventh) is the only team on Navy's schedule ranked ahead of the Midshipmen.

Steele also tabs Navy as one of five teams not in a BCS conference that could make a BCS bowl this year, joining Boise State, Utah, Houston and UTEP.

Steele ranks Navy running backs (fullback and slot backs) as the 13th best backfield in the country and tabs Navy's linebackers (outside and inside) as the 27th best unit in the country. Navy's running backs, linebackers and head coach Paul Johnson were all ranked No. 1 amongst the four Independent schools (Army, Navy, Notre Dame and Temple).

Junior fullback Adam Ballard, senior guard Zach Gallion, senior linebacker Rob Caldwell and senior defensive back Keenan Little were named First-Team All-Independent, while senior quarterback Brian Hampton, junior slot back Reggie Campbell, senior wide receiver Jason Tomlinson, junior guard Antron Harper, senior tackle Matt Pritchett, senior defensive end John Chan, senior nose guard Larry Cylc, senior outside linebackers David Mahoney and Tyler Tidwell, senior safety DuJuan Price and junior kicker Joey Bullen were all named Second-Team All-Independent.





Navy kicks off the 2006 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 2 against East Carolina in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Tickets are on sale at the Naval Academy Box Office in Ricketts Hall, by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY or via the internet at www.navysports.com. The East Carolina game will be televised nationally by CSTV and broadcast nationally on the Navy Football Radio Network.
